چکیده

This paper derives bounds on the performance of statistical object recognition systems, wherein an image of a target is observed by a remote sensor. Detection and recognition problems are modeled as composite hypothesis testing problems involving nuisance parameters. We develop information–theoretic performance bounds on target recognition based on statistical models for sensors and data, and examine conditions under which these bounds are tight. In particular, we examine the validity of asymptotic approximations to probability of error in such imaging problems. Applications to target recognition based on compressed sensor image data are given. This study provides a systematic and computationally attractive framework for analytically characterizing target recognition performance under complicated, non–Gaussian models, and optimizing system parameters. Keywords— automatic target recognition, imaging sensors, multisensor data fusion, data compression, performance metrics.

An Information-Theoretic Discussion of Convolutional Bottleneck Features for Robust Speech Recognition

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have been shown their performance in speech recognition systems for extracting features, and also acoustic modeling. In addition, CNNs have been used for robust speech recognition and competitive results have been reported. Convolutive Bottleneck Network (CBN) is a kind of CNNs which has a bottleneck layer among its fully connected layers. The bottleneck fea...

Information Measures for Object Recognition

We have been studying information theoretic measures, entropy and mutual information, as performance bounds on the information gain given a standard suite of sensors. Object pose is described by a single angle of rotation using a Lie group parameterization; observations are simulated using CAD models for the targets of interest and simulators such as the PRISM infrared simulator. Variability in...

Pattern - Theoretic Foundations of Automatic Target Recognition

This effort advanced the art of applying Grenander's pattern theory to automatic target recognition (ATR) problems. We extended jump-diffusion ATR algorithms to accommodate unknown infrared camera calibration effects and include more stable diffusion procedures for pose refinement, and developed flexible shape models to accommodate clutter. We also developed performance bounds on estimation and...
